To help us plan for the coming year’s activities, we invite you to attend our Open Meeting on Saturday, January 17 at the Curryville Community Center, 786 Albert Mines Rd., in Curryville.
We have a full and entertaining agenda, starting at 3:00PM with a movie, “GMO – OMG,” a thought-provoking film by Jeremy Seifert on GMOs in relationship to his 3 young children and the world around him.
Our open meeting follows at 5:00, including a potluck supper. Bring a dish to share. After the meeting, there will be a Crokinole tournament. Crokinole is a board game that was developed in rural Canada in the 1860s. It is a test of dexterity, with elements of shuffleboard and curling on a tabletop scale. For rules and information, click here. Limber up those fingers, and come join in the fun!

At this workshop Alyson will discuss ways to work with Mother Nature to design a healthy and natural garden, including beneficial insects, companion planting, and other weed management tools. She will cover common challenges faced by organic gardeners and what to do about them, including preventing problems before they happen, using a variety of weed management tools and more.

Alyson is not from a farm but worked on farms in Canada and overseas, eventually joining a group of people in Abbotsford, BC, to form a co-op and buy and run an organic vegetable farm. She ran her own business there selling salad greens and eggs for almost 10 years before meeting Will and moving to NB to run their own farm in McKees Mills, Windy Hill Farm. Now Alyson and Will run a 100 member CSA, sell their vegetables at a farmer’s market and also raise goats for meat and milk. Alyson teaches an organic gardening course in Moncton each spring to anyone interested in learning how to get started in organic vegetable growing.
The workshop will start with a short presentation indoors at the Forest Dale Nursing Home followed by some hands-on time in the community garden. There will be light refreshments. This workshop will be free/pay what you can, with a suggested donation of 10$. To register, please send the name, phone number and email address of each participant registering to Elizabeth at [email protected] or you can contact her at 875-5841.

This Sunday, Carole Coleman from Tansy Lane Herb Farm will be teaching us how to make jams and jellies. With the abundance of berries all around us it’s a perfect time to come and learn the tricks of the trade from Carole who will share with us recipes, tips, and more. Together we will make both a jam and a jelly and participants will get to sample and take home a jar of each, along with the knowledge on how to make their own! It’s sure to be a delicious and sweet time learning together.
